First Regatta in Eikos Training SeriesMinimize

To be published in Sailing

The first regatta of the Eikos Training Series was held at Benoni Sailing Club over the weekend 18/19 October at Homestead Dam. The unseasonably cold weather brought with it plenty of wind, which the juniors really enjoyed. The 38 enthusiastic sailors arrived early on Saturday and on registration were presented with their Eikos regatta T-shirts. There was much excitement as the boats were rigged, ready for the regatta. Each boat proudly displayed their Eikos boats stickers. Five races were held on Saturday in ideal conditions, with the beginners staying close to shore.

As this was a training regatta, the coaches followed the sailors continuously, to improve their sailing tactics and boat handling. Videos of the days racing were carefully watched and analysed. The sailors went home after having a delicious supper prepared by Leanda Santiero and her team.

Sunday brought with it plummeting temperatures. With an early start, only 2 races were held until the rain came down. The wind was great, but the conditions were rapidly deteriorating. The youngsters were frozen when they came off the water. Lunchtime was welcome with plenty of hot chocolate, warm showers and prize giving. Eikos presented jackets and vouchers for lucky draw prizes.

The classes entered were Optimists, Dabchicks, Gypsies, Mirrors and O9rs. Juniors came from Pretoria (PSC), Germiston (VLC), Johannesburg (ESC), and Boskop (BYC) with most of the sailors from Benoni (BSC).

The participants would like to thank the Rear Commodore Martin Jackson and his team for running the bridge, Donald Coward and his team for keeping the tummies full, and Ivan Gibbons, Evelyn Osborne, and Leon de Raay for undertaking the training.

Cheryl Emmett wrote the certificates for all the entrants, and Peter Clayton and Leon took the photos and videos.

A great big thank you to Eikos Risk Applications who have shown considerable foresight in assisting with junior training in NorthVaal. With support like this, the quality of junior sailing will improve by leaps and bounds. The next regatta in the series takes place in April next year.
